Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN exhaust-brake valve has been developed by Dowty Hydraulic Units Ltd. and has been put into limited production, one size only being made. This is suitable for exhaust systems with a 3-5-in.-diameter bore, there being no standard range at present although any size to meet the particular requirements of vehicle makers and operators can be made.

Features of the unit are a specially designed gas seal at the control shaft and a free-floating butterfly plate valve. It is claimed that the design ensures good sealing of the exhaust gases for braking and that the shaft seal prevents exhaust gas leakage to the atmosphere and gives adequate protection to the control shaft and bearing.

No operating unit has yet been decided on—suitable methods arc being investigated—but the valve can be used as a replacement for existing types utilizing the eontrol system on the vehicle.
