Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE agreement on a 15 per cent pay increase for drivers of one-man buses negotiated between Chesterfield Corporation and the T.G.W.U. (reported in The Commercial Motor last week) will allow the Corporation to place its first buses of this type into service. The bodies of these vehicles are currently being completed by Park Royal Vehicles Ltd. and are mounted on eight A.E.C. Reliance and two Leyland Leopard chassis.

Based on the standard 30-ft. Park Royal metal-framed body, built. to B.E.T. design, the buses are fitted with an extra bay to facilitate the inclusion of a separate central exit--a type of layout becoming increasingly popular for oneman operation. Seats are provided for 42 passengers and are all forward-facing with the exception of a longitudinal seat for three passengers immediately behind the exit, which facilitates the movement of passengers at this point. This is particularly important, as the buses are intended to carry 18 standing passengers. Double handrails on the seat back squabs, together with four flexible seat-to-ceiling stanchions, are a further aid to standees.

An easy two-step entrance is provided, and the driving compartment is wider than usual to provide ample room for the driver during his conducting operations. A feature of the interior which Park Royal has helped to pioneer in conjunction with the B.E.T. is the provision of seven illuminated advertisement panels which also provide the saloon lighting. These are supplemented by two normal lights in the bay between the entrance and exit. The advertisement panels are lit by 3-ft. fluorescent tubes, and the formed Perspex frames with art advertisement space of 26 in, by 8 in. were supplied by Taylor Industries Ltd., of Rowlands Gill, Co. Durham.

Other features of the interior specification include green moquette trimming of the scats, anodised window frames, stoveenamelled window inserts and ceiling panels, a continuous strip bell. Pneustrip floor treads, glass-fibre wheel arches colour-impregnated to match the brown lino floor covering and two recirculatory heaters. Exterior equipment includes a reversing sign and lamp at the rear.
