DURING last week-end a dbc.ument of outstanding importance reached hundreds of operators in the northwest. Prompt co-operation in moving big stocks was requested. In case of slow or inadequate response, official compulsion is foreshadowed. But little doubtis felt that road-carriers can do what is at present too much for the railways, because, for some months, two commercial vehicle pools have already been doing good work—to the profit of vehicle-owners and the satisfaction of the authorities. They are asked to rally rouml•more than ever to meet national needs in shifting raw material.

The two pools, one for short distance jobs and the other for long journeys, are .operating as Manchester Imports Control Transport. The honorary secretary is Mr. W. Farncirth, 28, Queen Street, Manchester, 2: this is the address of the C.M.I.T.A. area organization, of which he is secretary.

The circular to operators explains first that, the appeal is made on behalf of the Regional Transport Commissioner and. a certain Emergency Committee. Present stocks will be followed by others, thus ensuring a long spell of activity. .

Among other points in the request for vehicles it is mentioned that the Regional TranSport Commissioner has expressed his confidence in the ability of the transport industry to rise to the occasion and prove its mettle. The Pool has undertaken to provide and supervise the operation of 50 vehicles as a minimum to be always available. If the effort proves satisfactory, the

-number of vehicles will be increased and the transport of large quantities of material by road will continue indefinitely.

To secure the necessary vehicles the Pool is requesting carriers to indicate to Mr. Farnorth the number of vehicles of .5 tons to 15 tons capacity (including trailers) they are prepared to release for this traffic. The material is mainly for two distant cities, but vehicles will sometimes be used for carting to dumping centres situated in the locality.

Rates are being negotiated which will be remunerative and reasonable to the carrier, who Will be paid for a minimum day at least whenever his services are used. Adequate fuel will be available to enable vehicles on the job to be kept fully engaged.
