Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Unit which has a Capacity of 5.195 Litres and Develops 67 b.h.p PROMINENT amongst the exhibits at Olympia of . Henry Meadows, Ltd., Wolverhampton, is a new fourcylindered oil engine, known as. the 4M.L.-type. The Lanova system of controlled combustion is used, and the unit is rated at 27.4 h.p. Having a bore and stroke of 105 aim. and 150 Ann, respectively the capacity works out at 5.195 litres and the power output is 38 b.h.p. at 1,000 r.p.m., with a maximum of 87 b.h.p. at the governed speed of 2,000 r.p.m. The maximum torque i3 199 lb.-ft.

Hardened liners are provided in the cylinder block, a feature of which is the use of external water-transfer ports. long. tie bolts of 1-e-in. diameter secure the cylinder block, these extending from the top of the block down to the main bearings. Whilst the block is cast as a unit a separate head is provided for each pair of cylinders.

Both the crankcase and base are made of Elektron and a detachable cover in the base provides ease of access to the main oil pump. The last is so arranged that it may be removed complete without disturbing the base chamber.

Supported on five bearings, the crankshaft is of sturdy design, whilst the bearings are steel backed and at the front, centre and rear have a diameter of 3t ins., the two intermediate hearings being of 3-A; ins. diameter. The camshaft, which is arranged in a high position on the off side of the engine, is driven by a :duplex roller chain and

operates the overhead valves through ,short push rods.

The pistons are of a special light silicon alloy and three compression rings and one scraper ring are used, all the rings being located above the gudgeon pin. The connecting rods are of steel with steel-backed big-end bearings.

Careful attention has been paid to the lubrication system and a large external oil filter is fitted on' the near side/. All main bearings are pressure fed and the overflow from the pump to the filter lubricates the timing chains and the spiral-gear drive for the injection pump. At the same time a bleed hole is provided in the oil-pump shaft, this coinciding once each revolution With a hole drilled in the crankcase, so that full-pressure lubrication is obtained for the main camshaft hearing and the rocker shaft.

The well-known Lanova combustion . system is incorporated, tIlus enabling a low compression ratio to be used and greatly minimizing "Diesel knock." Further advantages claimed for this system include low piston and exhaust temperatures, clean combustion and good fuel consumption.

A C.A.V.-Bosch pump is employed and the injectors are a product of the same concern. Provision is made for an 8-in.-diameter dynamo, this being driven in tandem with the water pump.

With the exception of the starter, all the equipment is arranged on the near side, so that the power unit is equally suitable for forward or normal-control vehicles.
