The 28th Institute of Road Transport Engineers Conference and Exhibition will be the event's final year in Telford—next year the 1RTE will join forces with the SMMT to stage a bigger show at the NEC. But there's plenty to see at the show, which runs today (15 May) and tomorrow at the Telford International Centre. It's the UK's biggest showcase for trucks, trailers, bodywork, accessories and systems, and quite a few products can be seen for the first time— including a restyled Renault Magnum and Seddon Atkinson's Leader.

by Toby Clark • The biggest launch of the show is likely to he Seddon Atkinson's Leader, a startling looking low-cab municipal chassis with an innovative central steering position (see page 17 for the full story).

Vying with the Leader is a restyled Renault Magnum in 430hp spec; this has a completely redesigned interior with a swivelling driver's seat and integral seat belts.

Volvo is showing the first UK-spec 11112 fitted with Road Relay, the Cummins-designed system for monitoring and recording data from the engine and other truck systems, such as speeds, fuel consumption and gear useage. The company is also spotlighting a pair of FLC 7.5-tonners and three tippers, including the supercharged FL626 6x4.

MAN's 12000 appears in heavy-haulage guise as the 13.4031)11' 6x4 tractive unit. It has a 9.0-tonne front axle fitted with wide-single tyres and is equipped with a crane. Another exhibit is the twin-steer 22.403FPLT.

Scania's stand includes a drawbar combination and a low-height tractive unit.

A year after the firm's first appearance at IRTE, Isuzu Trucks is releasing details of its most important model yet, a 7.5tonne chassis.

ERF has the latest ES8 6x2 rigid, with a lifting tag axle, in Milk Marque tanker specification. This versatile vehicle can operate on its own or with a drawbar irailer.

Leyland Daf is showing the Space Cab ver sion of the 95XF, as well as a 45-Series, a 55-Series brewery vehicle and an 85-Series tractive unit. Mercedes-Benz has five Actros tractive units on show with 814, Vario, Sprinter and Vito models.

Foden's stand features a pair of tractors with mid-lift axles, a 4x2 tractor and 6x4 drawbar unit; power comes from Perkins and Caterpillar engines, and all the exhibits have air suspension on the drive axle.

Fruehauf introduces a sliding-roof version of its Speedliner curtainsided trailer at IRTE, known as the Speedliner Euro. The trailer uses a Sesam sliding roof with alloy roof struts and a weatherproof mechanism; a dropsicle version will also be available.

York Trailers shows off its ZT trailer build concept at the show, while Ray Smith Group is exhibiting its latest air-lift demount system.

Other trailers include a highcube demountable drawbar trailer built by Wilson IS and operated by Brit European.

RVL has built a dual-compartment temperature-controlled body for Brake Bros Food Services, mounted on an lveco EuroCargo 120E chassis; other exhibitors include Carrier Transicold.

Vehicle monitoring systems are on show from Leafield AVM (with the VeMiS system), Furon, ICS Black Box and others. New accessories shown at IRTE include the BIN Backeye reversing camera, a novel system for restraining wooden pallets—the Kollibrodd, from Spanset Load Restraint—security devices from Maple and two designs of portable wheel weighing pads, from PM On Board and Axtec.

Components seen for the first time at IRTE include a lowheight air suspension system from Granning Lynx, Neway Anchorlok's Lifeseal spring brake actuator and a new modular sliding fifth wheel from

VI-3G. Dunlop will show its wide single-steer tyre, while SAF's SK-Intraax integrated axle/air suspension system makes its first Telford showing.

Henderson Mobile has a range of bodywork components at Telford including an insulated shutter, the FlexiPlus insulated bulkhead and the G-Rail CRII load retention system.
