test instrument which is to be in lorry service stations throughout the world.
The instrument — a digital multimeter for testing Volvo electrical equipment — is being produced by Thorn EMI Instruments of Dover.
The order was placed by the Volvo Truck Corporation at Gothenburg as a move in the joint project to design a multimeter which meets Volvo's own specification requirements.
The instrument is claimed to offer more test capabilities than other multimeters and can measure small resistances and current or temperatures in the range —50° to 350°C (-58° to 662°F) using separate probes.
Co-operation between Thorn EMI and Volvo over this project began after the British company had started to develop a standard range of multimeters in 1980.
