THE time is coming when active steps should be taken to preserve some of the outstanding specimens of " modern cleansing appliances. In this sphere we are approaching the end of an era and unless a positive move is made valuable examples of post-war progress may easily disappear for ever. Present-day property values would make it difficult to justify the setting up of a permanent collection of appliances but if some municipalities and manufacturers each held one or two items the whole could be co-ordinated by means of a register which might be maintained by an appropriate officialbody such as the Institute of Public Cleansing.
Incidentally I see that Northfleet U.D.C. recently placed on the retired list an unusual Karrier Bantam which went into service in June 1939. Over a long period the Bantam worked three days each week on refuse collection and the rest on gully-emptying. This was made B48 possible by interchangeable bodywork, there being cesspool/gully emptying equipment with a 600-gal, tank and alternatively an 8-cu.-yd. refuse collection body; the switch could be made in 30 minutes.
