Open-ended Ratchet Spanner AA NOVEL design of jaw is incorporated in a combination ring and open-ended spanner introduced to the British market by E. F. Allchin and Co. Ltd. Whilst the ring spanner end of the tool is conventional, the open end has a small recess cut into one of the driving faces and this allows the spanner to be operated in exactly the same fashion as a ratchet spanner.

Ratchfix is the name given to these spanners and they are available in sizes ranging from 9 mm. to 30 mm. and from

in. to 1136 in. across flats, the size of both ends of the spanners being the same in all cases.

Tests have been carried out with one of the Ratchfix spanners and it was found to operate most effectively. The recess clears the corners of the hexagon when the spanner is turned in one direction and the flats are engaged in the other. Once it is on the nut or bolt head, there is no need to reposition the spanner to obtain the ratchet action.

The only possible cause of trouble is that on the side of the jaw containing the recess, the area which bears on the flat of the nut is fairly small and if the spanner is not properly engaged or if this part of the jaw is worn, it is likely that the corners of the nut will get rounded off. No difficulty was found with the new spanner tested and which performed very satisfactorily.
