THE hydrostatic transmission system I developed under Mr. Donald Firth it the National Engineering Laboraory, East Kilbride, was displayed last week as applied to a small dump truck, 'rom which the standard transmission tad been removed. During the past eight nonths work on this project has been inanced by P. R. Motors of Coventry, who are stated to be at present considerrig the commercial application of such a iydrostatic drive to the motor industry, In October 1961, we reported on the nitial developments with the Firth transnission system, and at that time the

■ Tational Engineering Laboratory was working in conjunction with Towler 3rothers (Patents) Ltd., Leeds, with a iew to fitting the equipment in a Bristol ,odekka double-deck bus. The system Ls currently developed is likely to cost nore than a conventional transmission, nit it is claimed that it will require less naintenance and give smoother "gear hanging ", whilst a further advantage is hat full engine power can be transmitted o the wheels at low wheel speeds.
