QUARRY owner and public works contractor told the South Wales icensing Authority, Mr. Ronald Jackson, hat he was applying for a 19-vehicle B icence for two reasons—ease of adminitration, and because of the difficulty of iring suitable tipping vehicles in the rea.

The applicant, Mr. Thomas S. Rees, roprietor of Cornelly Quarries, Pyle Glam) told Mr. Jackson at Cardiff last eek that he was the principal share older and managing director of the Sker

and and Gravel Co. and owned and controlled several other companies upplying quarry materials, sand and gravel for various projects in the area. He had carried goods for these companies an C-licensed vehicles (11 of which he proposed to surrender if the application was granted) by invoicing them to him-self and then reinvoicing them to other riustomers, which took a great deal of idministration.

Asked by Mr. C. R. Cradick, his solici:or, about the facilities offered by the bjectors, Mr. Rees said that every tipper n the area was booked up and there was :oo much work about. One of the abjectors, S. Harfoot and Sons Ltd., had tupplied vehicles about 18 months ago which, he said, were not suitable for the ;arriage of hot tarmac because of broken tailboards. If he had tried to load them with chippings the material would have run out of the bottom of the vehicles. Asked about another objector, Jones Motors (Kentig Hill) Ltd., Mr. Rees said that he had supported them six or seven times in the licensing court.

" After hc got his B licence we asked him for lorries and we didn't see him", he said. Other objectors had supplied vehicles but had later stopped. Everybody was crying out for tipping lorries, he added.

Cross-examined by Mr. Ian Jenkins for several objectors, Mr. Rees admitted that some of the companies mentioned in the application had not been producing materials for some time.

Mr. Jenkins: "You are using C-licensed vehicles as they were not intended?" Mr. Rees replied that this had been done to save paperwork. When Mr. Jenkins suggested that there must be a good reason why hauliers would not work for him, Mr. Rees replied "Yes. Our work is tough ".

After the luncheon adjournment Mr. Cradick told the Authority that his instructions were to withdraw the application because it was misconceived in various aspects. An application for costs, made by Mr. Jenkins on behalf of the objectors, was refused by the Authority.
