NEW legislation to deal with dazzle and other matters not covered by the Road Transport Lighting (Rear Lights) Bill, a Private Member's measure, was forecast last week by the Earl of Birkenhead, Lord-in-Waiting. He said that it would be introduced as soon as a convenient opportunity occurred.

The Earl of Birkenhead was speaking during the second reading of the Rear Lights Bill in the House of Lords.

Lord Lucas of Chilworth said that before new legislation was introduced, the present laws should be reasonably enforced. The Road Traffic Act, 1934, was out of date and existing legislation controlling vehicles should be surveyed and consolidated. • The Bill entered the committee stage yesterday.

POLICE MUST BE THERE

THE question of petroleum inspectors being authorized to examine vehicles entering the Blackwall and Rotherhithe tunnels (The Commercial Motor, May I) has been taken up with the London County Council by the Road Haulage Association. The danger of vehicles with valuable loads being stopped by persons other than the police, and perhaps not in uniform, has been pointed out.

The R.H.A. have been assured, however, that in all such cases the petroleum inspectors will be accompanied by uniformed police.
