pERMISSION has been Oven by the West Midland Licensing Authority to Burton Corporation to modify fares and revise conditions of operation, and it is expected that an additional £12,900 per annum will be yielded as a result. The fares are now 14(1., 2d., 3d., 4d., 5d., and 6d., most of the, id. stages having been eliminated. The corporation's operating costs are 26.31d. per bus-mile, whilst incomewas 25.01d. per bus-mile.

When, last /week, he granted an application by Neath and Cardiff Luxury Coaches, Ltd.. Neath, for; a revised. fare table on their Swansea— Cardiff service, Mr. H. J. Thom, South Wales Licensing Authority, expressed surprise that the company had incurred a trading loss of £10,946 for the year ended March 31.

Cause and Effect He pointed out that the application followed the recent fare increases granted to the South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., and the Western Welsh Omnibus Co., Ltd. He said; " The impression we had was that this service was a little gold mine. This is no longer the case."

On behalf of the Neath-company, Mr. Llewellyn Jones replied, "No, sir."

He said it was hoped that as a result of the present application, trading losses of 13,608 in 1951-52 and £10,946 during the past year would be changed into a trading profit of £2,727.

The application, if successful, would mean a reduction in 56 single fares and 14 return fares, and an increase in 76 single and 148 return fares. A number of other fares would be unchanged.

Isle of Man Fares Up Fares, including contract-ticket rates, of Isle of Man Road Services, Ltd., rose recently as a result of an increase ia the tax on oil fuel imposed in the Manx Budget. The advances were less than those authorized by the Highway Board and are not likely to make up £22,000 a year—the cost of the tax increase. Unremunerative services have been reduced. A company spokesman has said that since October there has been a weekly loss of £500-£600.

A third application to revise stagecarriage and workmen's fares has been lodged by the Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd., with the Yorkshire Licensing Authority. The Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co., Ltd., seek to withdraw certain workmen's return fares.

Bradford Corporation have applied to increase charges, following an application by the Yorkshire Woollen District concern. Keighley-West Yorkshire Services, Ltd., have asked to discontinue specified schoolchildren's Id. return tickets and workmen's discount tickets.

The Authority has granted an applia32 cation by Huddersfield Corporation to withdraw conditions relating to workmen's tickets on 54 services. Permission has been granted to the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., to revise scales on 28 routes, the Midland General Omnibus Co., Ltd., on 25 services, and the Mansfield District Traction Co., on six.

United Automobile Services, Ltd., have applied to withdraw workmen's return fares on three routes.

East Midland Motor Services, • Ltd., wish to raise fares consequent upon an application by Doncaster Corporation to revise scales.

.7s. 4d. CHEAPER BY ROAD pERMISSION was granted recently

• & by the Eastern Licensing Authority to Mr. A. F. Braybrooke, of Swaffhara, to run coaches for personnel at West Raynham R.A.F. station Wishing to go to London on week-end leave. The Eastern Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., and the Railway Executive objected: The proposed fare by road was 16s., compared with fl 3s. 4d. for the existing road-rail service.

T.G.W.U. AGREE ALETTER has been received by Rochdale Transport Committee from the local secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, agreeing in principle, to a scheme whereby bus drivers who receive their training with the transport department shall repay the whole or part of the cost of their instruction should they leave within a year of obtaining their licences.
