By Using •a two-piece valve collar, Messrs. W. E. Hutchinson and G. Gronow, 21, Park Lane, Queen Street, Cardiff, have invented a method which permits the easy removal of a valve without the aid of a lifter.

A cotter is employed to attach to the valve stem a cap which incorporates a circular flange. Between the last-named and the spring is a collar with a rim which surrounds the cap and the cotter. In that rim is formed a gap, which can be brought opposite the cotter by rotating the collar.

When the cam opens the valve, the can bears against the end of the stem and thus relieves the cotter of its load. In that position the cotter can be withdrawn through the gap in the collar.
