Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DESPITE the fact that the new model A Ford chassis has a threespeed gearbox it can, if desired, be equipped with a two-speed auxiliary transmission built by the Ford Co. itself, this gear, of course, being supplied at an extra cost. This equipment applies to the American model, and we do not yet know whether the gear will

be available for the British-built product.

The new device is mounted at the rear of the standard three-speed gearbox and it replaces the enclosed coupling shaft which connects the standard gearbox to the universal joint at the front of the propeller shaft.

The auxiliary gear is of the constantmesh epieyclie pattern, closely resembling. that previously employed for the Ford steering-gear reduction. It consists of a sun gear and a large internal gear, .between which are three planetary pinions. A dog clutch of the pinion typo is mounted upon the splined shaft • of the sun 'pinion, and through the medium of a fork controlled 042' by a curious type of double pedal this clutch can be shifted forward into internal teeth in the housing of the internal gear, or backward into other internal teeth cut in a plate which forms a kind of bulkhead in the

auxiliary gearbox. When in the forward position the gearing is locked and the drive is, consequently, direct. There is, of course, a neutral position between the gears, and for low gear the dog engages with the teeth in the bulkhead, so locking the sun pinion and causing the planetary pinions to roll around it, thus giving a reduction of 1.47 to 1, or about 32 per cent.

' The cage carrying the planetary pinions is secured to the driven shaft conveying the torque to the rear axle.

An interesting feature is the provision of a pinion for a power take-off, but this take-off is not at present supplied by the Ford Co., which, however, suggests the design shown in one of the accompanying illustrations.

The overall ratios permitted by the dual-transmission gear range from 23.41 to 1 with first speed and low auxiliary speed to 5.11 to 1 with both transmissions in direct gear. It may be mentioned that the standard first gear is 15.95 to 1. With the main gearbox in top and the auxiliary gearbox in low the ratio is 7.5 to I.
