Surprising Variance in Passenger Fares. Many Owners Arrange for Meals

THE TRANSPORT of passengers by motor coach from Liverpool to the Chester races is a business which is quite as important, if not more so, for Merseyside owners as catering for those who wish to see tho Greed National. The races took place on three days of

last week, and arrangements were made by the authorities for a record number of visiting coaches.

The traffic arrangements were more up to date than previously, and numerous parking grounds were placed at the disposal of coach owners. The racecourse authorities largely increased the size of the carriage enclosure on the Roodee. This year catering for motor coach passengers on the course became very popular, and several companies made arrangements similar to those made by the New Brighton Motor Coach Co. (who turned out their whole fleet of Daimlers) on previous occasions. The New Brighton Co., who charged 35s.. for the journey, admission to the Couree, four-course luncheon immediately on arrival, and afternoon tea, had their motor commissarial department on the course early.

Special arrangeMents were made by, the police for dealing with a big arrival of motor coaches arid buses, for, otherwise, on account of the narrow streets of Chester, hopeless chaos might have resulted.

The corporation parking ground was not available during the races, but the Cattle Market along the riverside and another field were available for the parking of coaches. An effort was made to direct all heavy traffic (motor coaches and buses) to the north side of the city and to keep light traffic to the south side, in order to facilitate the movement of pedestrians.

Most of the Liverpool coach owners were "all out" to cover the Chester races, and the quotations to the publics were between 3s. 6d. to 35s.

The Crosfield Motor Co., of Chester, added to their Birkenhead-Chester service a, saloon bus, which left Woodside Ferry at 10.45 a.m. on each of the three race days. They had 400 seats available teach (lay, and the fare was 3s. 6d. return.

The LancashireUnited Tramways, Ltd., ran Dennis coaches from Liverpool, and their charge was 5s. per passenger. C. F. Rymer, Ltd., who provided meals on the course, Which were served under the supervision of the chef of their Llangollen Rotel, quoted 30s. for the journey from Wallasey, admission to the couree, luncheon. and tea.

A Birkenhead companv offered a 14seater elier4t-bancs for hire, and asked for .B4 4s. for the day. Collingvvood Motors, Ltd., Liverpool, had still another quotation-16e.--for the journey, admission to the course, and lunch.

Blackpool owners also ran coaches to the Chester races. Blackpool is 45 miles from Liverpool and 63 miles from Chester. The Blackpool owners' fare for the return journey was 10s.
