Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Mercedes-Benz has alleged that ,VIAN'sfigures on the SCR vs EGR debate "don't stack up" (see www roadtransport.com and news, page 8). Here 's MAN's response...

WE'RE ASTONISHED by these accusations. MAN was a pioneer of both EGR and SCR technology-so we do know what we are talking about.

For a start, the 35% difference between Euro-4 and Euro-5 NOx emissions is a matter of fact in the legislation that's all!

As to our I 7,000-litre AdBlue usage figures, these stand any examination:They refer to a Euro-5 truck covering 100,000 miles a year for five years, and are based on figures quoted publicly by none other than MercedesBenz UK boss, Ian Jones. That's 4% Euro-4 AdBlue usage, increasing to 6% at Euro-5.We even allowed just 8mpg diesel usage, though EGR-engined MAN TGAs do far better than that in tests.

And, yes, we really do believe our EGR fuel 'claims'.They are confirmed by independent road tests run by top magazines and, increasingly, by highly professional operators. Many of these show a fuel improvement of 5% and more.

It's time manufacturers stopped squabbling over technology and joined us in letting operators get on with making their choice. And at MAN ERE we're very happy with the choice a great many have made already Dave Cussans MAN ERF sales & marketing director
