I F an enterprising coach operator bought a neglected business, he was not entitled to increase its schedule to bring it into line with other local firms without proving need. This was submitted to the North Western Traffic Commissioners at Manchester last week by Mr. G. H. P. Beames, for the rail-. ways, who objected to an application by Messrs. T. Unsworth and Sons, Goose Green, Wigan, to add 29 destination's to their excursion and tour licence from Pemberton.

Mr. S. Moss, for the applicants, said that in 1956 his clients, who held two Wigan licences, took over the Pemberton licence of Messrs. Moorfield. This had only 23 destinations, a number of which were for football matches. The new destinations being sought were all for soccer or rugby matches and would bring the licence up to date. The, previous holders of the Pemberton licence had neglected it for five years. Regular customers could not understand why they could be taken to some matches but not to othe.is. The applicants should not be prevented from offering to their regular customers the same facilities as other operators, Mr. Moss submitted.

Mr. Beames pointed out that Pemberton was only two miles from Wigan and there was a seven-minute bus service between the two towns. In addition, -special trains ran from Pemberton to important matches.

Mr, F. Williamson, chairman, said that there would be a grant, but railway schedules would be examined and if they were reasonably, good certain destinations sought by the applicants would be deleted. The railways objected to 17 of the 23 destinations concerned.
