• Conservative leader William Hague's Keep the Pound campaign ground to a halt last week when the Daf 15-tonner he was using broke down in Calais.
The truck was returning from a visit to the port to gather truckers' views on fuel duty and illegal immigrants when an air lock in the fuel system brought it to a halt outside a fuel station.
While Conservative Central Office blames the incident on ''technical problems" with the vehicle, a spokesman for Daf says diesel system failures are "extremely rare" and are usually caused by running out of fuel. An air lock is created when the fuel tank is refilled.
