From Our Industrial Correspondent

CLERICAL and supervisory staff employed by the Devon General Omnibus Co., Ltd., have been awarded higher pay. This follows the agreement with the Tilling group of companies reported in The Commercial Motor.

The increases, negotiated between the general manager of the company and the National Union of Railwaymen, provide for an extra 5s. to 9s. a week for male adult staff, 5s. to 6s. a week for adult female staff and 3s. a week for boys and girls up to 17.

The company is a member of the British Electric Traction group. But the agreement brings no nearer the unions' aim to establish proper negotiating machinery for all clerical and supervisory staff in the group.

Leaders of the three unions with members in this field—the N.U.R., the T.G.W.U. and N.A.L.G.0.—went to the Ministry of Labour recently to discuss the question with Mr. Thomas Claro, the Ministry's chief conciliation officer.

But it is understood that Mr. Claro was unable to give them much help, since he can only bring the two sides together if they are both willing to talk.

The question was subsequently discussed by N.A.L.G.O.'s national transport committee, where it was decided to have another joint meeting with the other two unions before deciding on any forceful action.
