IN the House of Commons last week, 1. Mr. Ernest Davies said that Parliament did not realize, when it passed the Transport Charges, etc. (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1954, that the Mexborough and Swinton Traction Co. would be exempt from the control of trolleybus fares . by the Licensing Authority. [The concession was intended to apply particularly to Glasgow Corporation.]

Mr. Davies asked the Minister of Transport to amend the Act to limit exemption to municipal undertakings and to exclude companies.

Mr. Harold Watkinson, the Minister, declined to do so. He said that the Mexborough and Swinton concern was the only company affected. When [as reported in The Commercial Motor on January 20] the company raised its fares on January 1 without reference to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, it was not abusing its position, Only Id. was added to certain workmen's fares.

ROPE TRAILED FROM LORRY: HAULIERS SUED

ACASE emphasizing the danger of allowing ropes to trail behind lorries was heard last week by Birmingham County Court, Judge Forbes awarded 00 10s. damages and costs to Anthony Norman, Solloway, aged 15, who, through his father, sued W. R. Fletcher, Ltd., hauliers, 1175 Pershore Road, Stirchley.

The case arose out of an accident.in which the boy, who was riding on the pillion of a motorcycle, was thrown off after the front wheel of the machine passed over a rope which was trailing from a lorry.

The judge thought that the motorcyclist was behaving foolishly, but found that the defendants, who admitted that the tope was trailing through a hole in the floor of the lorry, had been guilty of negligence. If the rope had not been there, he said, the accident would never have happened.

GLASGOW BUS BODY ORDER CUT ACONTRACT for the supply of 100, instead of 150, double-deck bus bodies is to be placed with Walter Alexander and Co. (Coachbuilders), Ltd., by Glasgow Corporation. The transport committee have been asked to consider whether the other 50 bodies might be built in the department's workshops.

MORE BUS NATIONALIZATION

ROAD transport nationalization in Uttar Pradesh, India, is to be extended. Twenty-eight bus routes will be taken over by the Government from private operators next month. There will then be 365 State-operated routes covering nearly 4,300 miles. The State Government have a total fleet of 1.600 buses.
