16 parties have been entered against an application by Rochdale Transport Department to operate excursions and tours from the Town Hall Square. The application, which is to be heard by the North Western Licensing Authority at Rochdale on June 28, is in connection with the corporation's centenary celebrations.

It is the first time the undertaking has applied for permission to run excursions and tours.

The objectors include Ellen Smith (Tours), Ltd.; Kershaws Luxury Tours, Ltd.; Hebble Motor Services, Ltd.; Yelloway Motor Services, Ltd.; The Creams (Lanes), Ltd.; Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.; Chadwick and Barlow and Co.; 0. Smith, Ltd.; Richard Jay, Ltd.; and C. Holt and Sons.

Most of these operators are also to object to an application for consent by the corporation, which is to be heard on the same day. This seeks authority for the department to operate buses on certain roads in the urban districts of Milnrow, Littlehorough and He?Iwood.

TEST CASE ON TRADE PLATES?

A FTER two men had been fined at

Sheffield, last week, for using a lorry operating on a general trade licence for an unauthorized purpose, the defence said the magistrates would be asked to state a case.

The men, who had pleaded not guilty, were Arthur Smith and James Conley, both of Wakefield Road, Gildersome, near Leeds, partners in Cross Roads Commercials. They were each fined £5 and ordered to pay 10s. costs.

Prosecuting, Mr. D. F. Banwell said the lorry, with a general trade plate, had carried scrap motor parts, and that was an infringement of the regulations. He said that the carriage of scrap. accumulated in the course of their business, for the purpose of disposal and sate in Sheffield had no connection with the purpose for which the licence was issued.

Derek Smith. also of Wakefield Road, Gildersorne, the driver of the lorry, who was summoned for aiding and abetting, was given an absolute discharge.
