Participants in the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme ILCRS) will submit quarterly fuel data that is converted to CO2 equivalent emissions and aggregated into one carbon account to give an overall picture of the industry's contrihuLion to reducing its carbon impact.

ETA policy and communications Mi) James Hookham tells CM: Thc member flims chose fuel as a measurement as it is easily tracked. It also allows smaller hauliers to use the same measurement technique as the higger guys."

Although the ETA is pleased with the cross-section of launch members it has attracted. it is hop ing Lu encourage more companies to sign up.

"ilie road transport industry as a whole will he judged by its environmental performance. so the scheme is open to all CV operators. not just ETA members. The government is working on voluntar> guidelines for carbon emission reductions, and the worry is that it will make these manda10 in 2012," says Hookham.

"I lopetully. we can use the data from our scheme to ensure our industry isn't set unrealistic targets." he adds.

Justin Laney. fleet general manager at John Lewis Partnership. says it would he good if as many companies as possible signed up to the scheme.

It's important that we have a credible and auditahie way of measuring CO2, not only to create a level pLaying field. hut to show that the industry is leading on car hon reporting, making legislation un necessarv" Sara Dawson, logistics data analyst at building products firm Marshalls, agrees. The industry needs to play its part in contributing to ongoing carbon reduction, but it is also important that it is fairly assessed by governing bodies. The information gathered by the FTA scheme should facilitate reasonable and practical legislation in government:' Many of the 37 launch members are encouraging subcontractors to join the scheme. Martin Johnson, environment manager at Kuehne + Nagel. says: "We're encouraging our subbies to sign up because it's a win/win situation: not only is ii good for their environmental credentials. hut it also reduces their cost base."
