• Applicants for a group 2 licence must provide a medical practitioner's report, completed following a medical examination, before a licence is first issued to them. A further report is required at 45 and for every fresh application until 65, after which an annual check is required.
• Drivers usually go to their GP but can be charged more than £100, so some drivers prefer to go to a private clinic. Many advertise on the internet where charges can be lower, but the doctor will be unaware of the driver's medical history
• The medical standards for both group 1 (car and motorcycle) and
group 2 (lorry and bus) licensing are published in a booklet, At A Glance Guide to the Current Medical Standards of Fitness to Drive, which is downioadable from: www.dft.gov.uk/dviahredical.aspx.
• The Professional Dryers Association (FDA) has a dedicated section on its website devoted to health (Health Matters) recognising the fact that drivers diagnosed with an illness or condition that affects their LGV licence can find themselves in a "very lonely place": they might not be able to work for a time, with no way of finding any information as to what the future holds.
