Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EXPANSION OF the European Union does not appear to have resulted in an influx of truck drivers seeking jobs in the UK.

Home Office figures show that 24,000 people have registered to work in the UK over the past two months, but only a third of these arrived after 1 May when eight Eastern European countries joined the EU.

Better pay and conditions on offer in the UK were widely expected to attract workers from the new Eli states.

K Transport of Wolverhampton, which already employs eight Eastern European drivers, says there has been no noticeable increase in job applications over the past two months. Director Andrew Kay says his overseas recruits have built up steadily over the past five years: "They come to us through word of mouth. As long as they have a proper licence and are competent in doing the job we are happy to employ them.

"At the moment we are looking for three or four drivers," he adds. "I would certainly consider employing them from any of the new countries joining the EU. We can train them up in a couple of weeks but the language problems last for a few months.

Kay stresses that all 65 drivers on the fleet are paid the same rate.
