THE IDEA OF widening some of Britain's most congested motorways by 12 feet to fit in an extra lane is certainly a step in the right direction.

However, the whole of the Britain's road network takes up little more than 1% of the land area, so surely we should build more and better roads for the growing number of vehicles.

As far back as 1938 the County Surveyors Society advocated a continuous motorway from London to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. So far only 30% has been completed.
