Jennifer Ball reports on a drivers' pay dispute that could slash Jaguar exports.

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION of Jaguar Cars could suffer severe disruption from a pay dispute involving 25 car transporter drivers in the West Midlands.

The Transport & General Workers Union says the drivers at STVA UK in Coventry and Castle Bromwich will be voting on strike action after rejecting the offer of a 2.5% pay increase.

The company rejected further talks or the involvement of the arbitration service ACAS. If the action goes ahead it will affect the daily transport of about 300 cars, some of which sell for over £100.000.

The drivers haul finished cars from the Jaguar factory in Coventry to the distribution hub at Castle Bromwich, where they are also responsible for driving the cars off the transporters and onto specially adapted carriages for the onward journey to UK ports for worldwide distribution.

T&G regional organiser Bob Shaw says: -The success of the luxury cars, many of which are destined for the export markets, means our drivers are working extremely hard and taking on heightened levels of responsibility.

"They are moving millions of pounds of vehicles each week and deserve to be valued and recognised for that work and the responsibility which goes with it."

Jaguar and STVA both declined to comment on the dispute.
