A PAY RISE is less effective at keeping drivers at the same company than offering them greater responsibility, according to a sur vey by driver agency Manpower.

Of 1,500 drivers who replied to the survey on Manpower's website, more than 40% said extra responsibility would motivate them more than money. Less than 20% picked "financial incentive", while 30% went for "career advancement". And about 10% thought that recognition from their colleagues was their greatest motivating factor when at work.

But Manpower's quality and safety manager, Tony Goacher, acknowledges that the findings might prompt some scepticism.

He says: "Of course money is important and I think it is true that if you are paying a poor wage you will not keep drivers, but if you are paying a fair wage then I think this survey indicates that what excites drivers most is more responsibility."

He concludes: "Like any other workers, drivers want to feel appreciated in their work environments, be trusted with responsibility and have a career path mapped out for them."
