THREAT of a ban on all )wns operating daytime irking bans has been issued y United Road Transport nion deputy general secrery Arthur Hughes this week. The threat follows news that ins on the parking of cornercial vehicles — including lose delivering to their destiitions — are planned by local ithorities nationwide.

Mr Hughes told CM: "We in't say we are happy with is prospect. If local authories go ahead with these bans, e will have no alternative but I look at the possible banning traffic in affected towns." Already, URTU has carried it a ban on traffic parking :hemes in the Newmarket -ea when drivers agreed that rey would not deliver to the ..iffolk town.

And now this ban is likely to applied to other towns here drivers are said to risk Leir hgv licences by parking restricted areas.

"In a lot of places deliveries T made only at the discretion ' the local police and traffic ardens," said Mr Hughes, ind if that is lost, then the lvers risk their licences."

Many local authorities put Le bans on parking on with no iought of drivers who must .liver to shops with no back cess points, he continued. "Local authorities should_ alise that some thought Lould be given to the driver ho has to earn his living by !Iivering to these shops lore they slap on these irking bans," Mr Hughes !dared. that could close some shops with no rear access.

The union is concerned that delivery to these shops is made more and more difficult by the bans and the lack of rear access to shops in newly-created pedestrian precincts. Regional Council has banned Overnight parking by heavy lorries because of the environmental nuisance — with the approval of the union.

The ban is to operate between 9pm and 7am for lorries over 30cwt unladen and they may now park only in approved places.
