IT was nostalgia time, last week, folks, when London celebrated the silver jubilee of the passing of the last tram. BBC 1 took us on a trip down memory lane on Nationwide, enthusiasts paid emotional tributes and London Transport mounted a "Lest we forget" exhibition at Syon Park. Now, I'm not one for destroying our heritage, but trams, I ask you. When they broke down — oh yes they did — or jumped the rails — oh yes they did, they were a confounded nuisance and held up traffic worse than any bus convoy.
Passengers wanting to board had to make the kamikaze run between the footpath and the boarding step. And once on board, the unsprung slatted seats — their only merit was that they were vandalproof — were most uncomfortable.
