'0 Great Yarmouth Corporation Transport should go the credit, it seems, for educing the first one-man doubleker bus into service since the passing of new regulations. On July 1, the Leyland antean bus which bears the name ;gotty was introduced on the express tour the town, which is usually operated by Lmler Freeline single-deckers.
The inaugural run was featured on the ,a1 BBC television service on the same ming, but the significance of the operation that Great Yarmouth has received clis[nation from the Traffic Commissioners operate one-man double-deckers on this .1 throughout the season, the licence exing in November. Two more named uble-deckers are being adapted for use on ; service when traffic flow dictates the use double-deckers.
The buses are being operated with both :Is open, as the service is of a limited-stop nature. Most of the passengers are tourists, picked up at Britannia Pier or Wellington Pier who travel right round the circle, although a small number of local passengers also use the express service, boarding and alighting at intermediate points.
Mr. Hanchett told COMMERCIAL MOTOR that he was very grateful for the help and full co-operation received from the chairman of the Traffic Commissioners, Mr. W. P. S. Ormond, who has asked for a report at the end of the season on how the system worked. The only modification made to the bus in connection with one-manning was the fitting of a reversing light, and a ticket machine.
However, Peggotty is also the subject of an interesting experiment with Firestone Duplex tyres fitted at the rear. These tubeless double-width tyres allow the fitting of single wheels in place of the usual doubles, and are providing a much smoother ride. They have also resulted in a slightly better fuel consumption and decrease in unladen weight.
