Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DAYLOAD ratings of the standard I range of Foden goods vehieles have been changed and a new system of nomenclature has been introduced. Whereas formerly the code for each vehicle included the rated payload tonnage, ii now incorporates the maximum gross weight in tons.

Thus, the former FG.6/15 eightwheeled 22-ton-gross chassis, instead of becoming the FG.6/17 when uprated, will in future be known as the FG.6/24. Similarly, the FG.6/12 is now the FG.6/20, the FG.4/71becomes the FG.4/14, and so on.

Exis• ting eight-wheeled Fodens are

suitable for operating at 24 tans gross. New models will be further strengthened by the use of a 12-in.-deep frame and heavier rear springs. The tyre size will be unchanged.

Six-wheelers can also be run at 20 tons without modifications, but the makers advise the fitting of their heavier springs and 10.00-20 (14-ply) front tyres and heavy-duty rims. New six-wheelers will have 12-in, frames, the heavier springs and heavy-duty rims, resulting in an increase of 5 cwt. in unladen weight.

It is not recommended that existing four-wheelers with 8-in, frames be uprated to 14 tons, but chassis with 9-in. frames can be converted by fitting heavier springs, heavy-duty rims and 10.00-20 (14-ply) tyres. In this case, however, the weight distribution will not be correct unless the load is carried well forward; the front and r6ar axle loadings should not exceed 5 tons and 9 tons respectively..

New four-wheelers will have increased wheelbases to ensure correct weight distribution, new springs and heavier wheels and tyres. All Foden vehicles are suitable for 8-ft.-wide bodywork, and 8-ft.-wide front and rear axles are also to be available.
