Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE South Wales Licensing Authority last week granted permission to Caerphilly Urban District Council to increase fares on their bus services. With some exceptions, the new scale will be: 11.d. up to half a mile and 2d. for the first mile, rising by Id. for succeeding half-miles.

It was stated that costs had risen by more than Id. a mile to 2s. 5.33d. a mile in the past year. Present fares were estimated to show a loss of £1,084 next year, without taking depreciation into account. Net profit was £2,027 at the end of last March, but if provision had been made for depreciation, another £4,000 would have been needed to cover it.

The new rates were designed to increase revenue by £8,000, but resistance would probably bring that amount down to £5,000.

Similar increases in respect of a joint service between Caerphilly and Pontypridd were granted to Pontypridd Transport Department

EXTINGUISHER FOR FIRES. IN POROUS MATERIALS

ANEW type of fire extinguisher has been produced by Nu-Swift, Ltd., Elland, Yorks, for combating fires in porous materials, such as upholstery, wood shavings, sawdust and paper. The medium employed is known as wet water—plain water to which an agent is added to break down the surface tension of the liquid so that its penetrative power is improved.

Extinguishers of this type are claimed to be 50 per cent. more efficient for dealing with deep-seated fires than those using plain water. The agent employed in the Nu-Swift extinguisher is contained in a plastic bag which is burst when the extinguisher is operated and mixes with the water under high pressure. The Fire Offices' Committee have approved the use of the wet water pressure charge in the Nu-Swift 2-gal. Universal extinguisher, Models 1301 and 1300.

AIRWORK TO RUN OWN LORRY

ALICENCE has been granted to Airwork, Ltd.. by the Scottish Licensing Authority to operate a vehicle of 2.1 tons unladen weight within 50 miles of Prestwick airport. British Railways and an Ayr haulier objected on the ground that there already was an efficient service between Prestwick and Glasgow.

At present, Airwork, Ltd., hire transport from British Overseas Airways Corporation. This was said to be not wholly satisfactory, as timings were not always suitable and the Corporation gave their own vehicles priority in loading.

Airwork, Ltd., already have licences to operate vehicles from London airport and Ringway airport, Manchester. 83
