LACK of drive by the management in its approach to staff relations was alleged by Ald. G. H. Wigman when he presented to Nottingham City Council, last week (The Commercial Motor last week), the report of the committee of inquiry into the affairs of the transport department.

Nottingham's bus crews were " woefully underpaid," he said. Bus drivers' basic wages were lower than those of any other driver employed by the corporation: Their wages per week were higher because they worked excessive overtime. This in turn brought about a higher sickness rate.

Commenting on the report, Ald. C. Coffey said that after nine months' work the committee had reported that the only way to maintain an adequate service at a high level of efficiency was to relate fares to costs. Mr. Ben England, general manager, had been telling his committee that for nine years.

No action was taken on Ald. Coffey's. suggestion that the council should instruct those who signed the report to make a public apology to Mr. England.

The report was adopted, and it will now go before the transport committee. who have been asked to submit their findings within six months.
