"EASE MEDWAY CONGESTION," SAYS MR. BEDDOW

CONGESTION in the Medway towns %--• should be eased, because the efficiency of bus services was being affected by it, said Mr. R. P. Beddow, chairman of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., at the annual meeting on Tuesday. The decision to complete the Ashford by-pass and start work on the Maidstone by-pass was welcome, but overdue. "The pity of i is that these works are not to be dealt with in a spirit of greater urgency," Mr. Beddow ,declared. Current orders for 64 new vehicles included 11 pay-as-you-enter singledeckers which would go into service in the autumn. The vehicles would be one-man operated and used on country routes. A Bill before Parliament to merge the Chatham company, a subsidiary, with the parent concern was now unopposed.

NEW RULES FOR TRACR-LAYERS

MEW rules affecting track-laying vehicles are contained in the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Track Laying Vehicles) Regulations, 1955 (Stationery Office, Is.), which come into force on July 25. They are similar to those introduced recently concerning orthodox road vehicles. No load may normally project more than 1 ft. sideways from any vehicle on the roads or have a total width greater than 9 ft. 6 in. Semaphore indicators may be combined with winking lights, and indicators on trailers must conform to the specifications laid down.
