A NEW amendment to the Road -rx Traffic Bill seeks to raise the speed limit foi heavy goods vehicles from

20 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h. It has been tabled by a Conservative M.P., Mr. Gerald Nabarro.

Another amendment, which would empower local authorities to make regulations prohibiting the parking of vehicles within 10 yd. of a bus stop, and to erect public notices at such stops, has been made' by two Labour Members, Mr. George Craddock and Mr. Frank MeLeavy.

In all, back-benchers have tabled more than 20 amendments to the Bill, and these will be considered bY• a House of Commons Standing Committee, which is to meet for the first time next Tuesday.

ATREND towards the growing use Of eight-wheelers of 24 tons gross weight in this country is reflected by orders placed with vehicle manufacturers. More than 60 home operators have given orders during the past six months for Leyland Octopus models to the value of £1m. South Africa has ordered Octopus vehicles to the value of £250,000.

Many of the home orders are for vehicles with one driving axle instead of two.

The London Brick Co., Ltd., have asked for 20 Octopus lorries, and J. Summers and Sons, Ltd., 22. Summers already operate some 50 Leyland eight-wheelers.

VAUXHALL TO EXPAND TRAINING SCHEME

THE education and training centre of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., is to be doubled in size at a cost of £130,000 and the intake of apprentices increased from 54 to 125 a year. A greater supply of trained men than present facilities can provide will be needed, as the result of the company's previously announced £36m. expansion scheme.

The new centre, which will be completed early next year, will have 32,000 sq. ft. of floor space, compared with the present 14,900 sq. ft_ At any time there will be 350 apprentices under instruction, with 30 instructors.

IRAQ ASSOCIATION FORMED D EPRESENTATIVE of all private interests concerned with the development of roads and road transport in the country, an Iraq Road Association has been established in Baghdad. It will be concerned with roads within Iraq and those highways connecting with neighbouring countries.

The president is Mr. M. J. El-Shahibi, president of Baghdad Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. A. R. El-Tai, of the United Cement Co., Ltd.
