Government Reviewing Future Ownership • of 8,000 Unsold Lorries

BY A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

IT is likely that the Government will allow British Road Services to A keep the 5,571 vehicles unsold in list 5.4, bringing their total fleet (including 400 vehicles engaged exclusively on railway cartage) to at least 9,500.

A statement by the Minister of Transport, on Monday, that the Government were reconsidering the future ownership of about 8,000 B.R.S. vehicles still unsold refers to the balance of those already offered and fewer than 2,000 vehicles not yet put up for sale. It excludes the 4,000 vans in B.R.S. (Parcels), Ltd., for which offers are to be invited in October, and 2,000 contract-hire vehicles to be sold as chattels.

If B.R.S. are to be allowed to keep the units remaining from list 5.4, which are engaged mainly on trunk work, they will have a network of about 210 depbts. The possibility that they will do so is strengthened by the Minister's statement that the Government's aim behind the Transport Act, 1953, had largely been achieved.
