Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MHE WELDING of parts used in con nection with motor vehicles is not a job which can be often tackled with success by any but specialists. In the cases of cylinders and crankcases, whilst the actual welds may, on the surface, appear to be satisfactory, it is quite possible that thee :vitally. important parts have been seriously, distorted. It is only by the meticulous care, expert handling and the use of proper appliances, that such work can be carried out with freedom from risk in this connection, and as there are so many " botchers " posing as members f the trade, it is advisable for those who have welding repairs to be performed to take them to firms who have won satisfactory reputations in this class of work, particularly as, in many intances, these firma have developed special methods which are applicable to certain makes of vehicle.

During a recent visit which we paid to the works of The New Welding Co. (Southern), Ltd., of 26, Rosebery Avenue, London, E C.1, we examined with interest a method of repair, or perhaps it would be better to say, improvement, which they bay& applied to the crankcase of the Tylor engine.

It frequently happens that crankcase arms fracture close to the' main casing, and, for the particular make of engine reOared to, the company have adopted a

method of welding and strengthening which presents undoubted advantages. The arms on the Tylor crankcase are made hollow, and into this hollow is inserted a hollow casting of aluminium which fits clesely into every corner. The arm and the casting are irecurely welded together and to the crankcase.

If necessary, the face is trued up so that it will not exceed the original dimensions, so far as the breadth of a complete casting is concerned. This makes a very satisfactory job, and one which will probably outlive the rest of the engine. It can be done quickly, as the castings are stocked.
