Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T"petrol situation is now not so acute as it was during the critical period of the war; nevertheless, inverttors of paraffin vaporizers have plenty of, scope both now and in the future if the price of petrol remains in the neighhomhood of its present level.

A vaporizer which has many points:of merit, and which enables a car to TIM practically all the time on paraffin and yet allows for the use of petrol whenever required without stopping the engine or even the oar, is the Hayes paraffin vaporizer, which in its present form is designed for use on Ford cars.

This device has many novel points. To begin with, the fuel is ..elf-contained in a three-gallon tank placed close to the near side of the engine and is fed to the carburetter, which is above its level, by means of a wick enclosed in a i-,mall tube. The quantity of paraffin admitted to the mixing chamber is controlled by a needle valve. A lever Worked from the ignition advance and retard lever control, by means of a cross-shaft and adjustable arms, an air valve and a mushroom throttle valve, and the quantity of paraffin admitted by the needle valve is regulated by a wedge-shaped slide, also on, the same cross-shaft.

Torun entirely on petrol. the ignition lever is kept slightly retarded, and this has the effect of shutting the vaporizer throttle, and the ordinary petrol carburetter throttle is then used, the petrol carburetter being attached to he bottom of the Hayes vaporizer.

It is possible to use half petrol and half paraffin by half closing the ordinary throttle and half opening the vaporizer valve, and any other proportion of the two fuels can be obtained in a similar manner. To run entirely on paraffin, the ordinary throttle is dosed, all the running is done on the ignition lever, and the petrol may be turned off.

The drawing which we reproduce gives a good idea of the arrangement of the leVers and the needle valve, air valve and main valve.

The paraffin and air in the mixing chamber are heated by thecross tube, which is connected to the exhaust manifold or pipe.

' This vaporizer is not a new device, as it was patented in 1916, but since then various iinj3rovements have leen incorporated after much experiment, and

the resulting device appears to gave every satisfaction when used on a Ford car. The fitting involves no real trouble at all, as the new inlet pipe takes the place of the old one, the carbtmetter being transferred to it, whilst the connection to the ignition lever is quite easy. Its price compares favourably with many other vaporizers which we have seen. Complete with 'inlet pipe; tank and controls, the price is £8 10s., and the address of the concern marketing it is the Hayes Paraffin Vaporizer„ 344 and 108, Euston Road, N.W.
