• The Government is to consider a two-tier penalty law on drink-driving, but the Department of Transport has slammed the national press for exaggerating the likelihood of its introduction.
The system, which could see the alcohol breath test limit reduced from the current 80mg to 50mg of alcohol per 100m1 of blood, is only "one of a number of options" being considered in a consultation paper looking at "enforcement, limits and punishment".
in the two-tier system used in other European countries, drivers who exceed a 50mg limit are punished by short bans or fines.
The DOT says no date has been fixed for the production of the consultation paper.
