• A van driver and his mate who used a laser pen to try and blind a traffic examiner as she drove to the site of a weight check have each been sentenced to 120 hours of community service.
Bolton magistrates also ordered Terence Garside and Noel Boardman, both of Wigan, to pay traffic examiner Karen Farr E100 compensation each.
The two men pleaded guilty to intent to cause harassment and to using threatening behaviour.
The court heard that Farr's car was followed down country lanes by the two men, who were driving a van belonging to Cable & Wireless, of Westhaughton.
They shone the laser pen into her car and into the rearview mirror so that it was reflected into her face. They followed her on to the M61 Motorway, where they again shone the pen into her rearview mirror.
Apart from the danger to Farr's eyesight, they could have caused an extremely serious accident, the prosecution told the magistrates.
