Driving a bus is easier than driving a car, according to Dundee's latest clippie turned driver. Mrs Elizabeth Brindley has a provisional driving licence for her car but last week she passed her psv test. Mrs Brindley began her psv training last October but she has been driving the family saloon on "L" plates for eight years. Her recent success with a corporation bus has convinced her that she should now take lessons in car driving!

• The boss pays

Talking with some of the National Guild of Transport Managers' senior officers this week, I was surprised to learn that nearly half of the members have their subscriptions paid by their employers. I know the Guild rejects the suggestion that it is a trade union—but that's not a totally unfair analogy. So it's rather like the boss paying his men's union dues. Rum.
