• A private limited company whose chief object is marketing National Coal Board shale applied for their own operator's licence in Cardiff last week.
National Shales Ltd, of Cathedral Road, Cardiff, who started.business in 1968 and had built up a successful career in a short space of time conveying shale from tips to building sites and motorways and materials from power stations, applied for an operator's licence for two vehicles with provision for a further ten to be acquired within 12 months.
Appearing for the company Mr Kenneth Lomas, managing director, said they were concerned in marketing colliery shale and by-products in South Wales and the West of England and until now they had used hired haulage. They had contemplated purchasing two vehicles from one operator who through ill health was running his fleet down but on reflection said Mr Lomas, they would now operate new vehicles.
At the present time they were using seven vehicles on various sites but had in the past used up to 50 vehicles.
Mr Lomas said they would have their depot in Llantrisant and the maintenance of vehicles would be placed out on contract to a specialized garage. He felt the strength of their business was such that they could adequately purchase and maintain the vehicles applied for.
The LA, Mr. R. R. Jackson, said the margin applied for was large, but granted an 0 licence as applied for, although he restricted the first licence to two years.
