management conference

A FLEET MANAGEMENT conference next month will focus on the new drivers' hours regulations, managing digital tachographs and truck crime.

Organised by CM's sister publication Motor Transport, the one-day event at Aston Villa's football ground, Villa Park, in Birmingham, will also discuss the Working Time Directive, buying fuel.biodiesel and AdBlue.

The conference will include a new section called 'Being Seen To Be Green'.

In the light of the 'green taxes' currently under consideration, operators will be offered advice on what they can do to be green —and how to show the public their environmental credentials.

Leading transport lawyer Stephen Kirkbright will talk about the drivers' hours rules, which ! come into force on 11 April. Under these rules operators will he held responsible if their drivers breach the regulations. A defence will only be available to those operators who can demonstrate robust systems for scheduling checks and training.

The new drivers' hours' regulations could also force operators to take on up to 10% more drivers to cope with the requirement for a regular 45-hour rest.

Kirkbright will also talk about the WorkingTime Directive.

The keynote speaker will be Shadow Transport Minister Owen Paterson, who is preparing the Tories' transport policy.
