Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Registrations of trucks above 3.5 tonnes fell by 28.9% in January, compared with the same month last year, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Only AWD recorded an increase in registrations, up from 97 trucks to 112 giving it ninth place in the market ahead of Seddon Atkinson, Foden and Hino.

Leyland Daf saw registrations fall to 1,017 last month, a drop of 20.8% on January 1989. However, the company took over the number one spot from Iveco Ford, whose registrations dropped almost 30% to 1,000 vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz and Volvo held onto their third and fourth positions respectively. Mercedes registrations fell a modest 10.7% compared with Volvo which suffered a drop of almost 41%. Fifth place in the market changed hands last month, with Renault overtaking ERF, although both saw a fall in registrations compared with last year. In seventh spot, Scania experienced a drop of almost 50% in registrations to 229, while eighth-placed MAN did better with registrations dropping 41.02% to 207.

El Panel van registrations in the 1.8-3.5-tonne sector suffered slightly less, with an overall drop of 15.69%. The effects of the industrial dispute at Ford have yet to show in registrations, which dropped only 11% compared with January 1989. Registrations of the Leyland Daf 200 and 400 Series fell 28% to give the company second place in the market ahead of Renault, which registered 793 vehicles, a drop of 21.7%.
