QWe are in the marine business, but in our spare time we race circuit boats. We carry the boats to and from the races on a Volvo artic with a 40ft box. Do we need an Operator's Licence? Should we use the tachograph? Can we tax it as a private vehicle? And what class of licence do we need to drive it? AS, Cardiff AProvided you do not advertise your company's name on the vehicle, carrying boats for leisure cannot be described as "carrying goods in connection with your trade or business". As it is for private use, you do not need an Operator's Licence and you can forget the tachograph. Tax the
vehicle at the private rate, but you will need an HGV Class 1 licence to drive it.
