• Alison Jones, the wife of Layton Jones, has succeeded in her bid for a five-year PSV Operator's Licence for 48 vehicles after denying it is part of a sham to enable her husband to get back into the bus and coach industry.

In December, the group of companies operated by her husband had their licences revoked by South Wales Deputy Traffic Commissioner Gerrard Sullivan, on maintenance grounds (CM 14-20 December); a decision which was upheld by the transport tribunal (CM 18-24 December).

Mrs Jones says she always wanted to run her own transport business, and when Jones Motor, of Ynysybvvl came on the market in 1989, she and her husband decided to buy it.

An application for a licence was submitted before the Clayton Jones companies were called to a public inquiry. However, this was withdrawn after her husband was disqualified from holding a licence, and so Mrs Jones submitted an application in her own name.

Sullivan said he could not ignore the fact that the nominated transport manager, Michael King, had been involved with some of the companies whose licences had been revoked.

Mrs Jones said her husband had been the guiding influence in those companies, but that she intended to run this business on her own and would not be a "front".
