Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck gearbox manufacturer Eaton is in the final stages of dynamometer testing a "beefed up" version of the popular Twin Splitter box.

Called the TS15612, it is capable of handling nominal torque ratings of around 2,100Nm (1,5481bft).

Eaton is keeping tight-lipped about potential customers, but agrees it would be suitable for trucks like the Iveco Ford TurboStar 190.48 (Twin Splitter transmissions are already used in lower-powered versions of the TurboStar, the 190.48 having a 13-speed Fuller Roadranger) and those tractors destined to be fitted with the airto-air charge-cooled Cummins Super E465 engine.

According to Eaton, the heavy duty TS15612 Twin Splitter should be in full production "by the end of this year or the first part of 1991".

A 15/16-speed version of the Twin Splitter is also under consideration. Eaton is already talking about introducing an 18speed version of the Roadranger range-change box, designated RT015618, primarily for heavy haulage applications. Prototypes have already been under evaluation in Austria. Eaton now has 240 SAMT semi-automated versions of the Twin Splitter box in operation in Europe with 50 in the UK. El Eaton's 4106 synchromesh transmission has been specified for Renault Midliner 200 and 250 trucks on sale in the United States.
