■ ,aids is eontained iii the first of six Road Haulage Efficiency Pamphlets issued jointly by British Road Services and the Road Haulage Association as part of a campaign to help traders, manufacturers and port authorities to speed up the turnround of vehicles calling at their premises. The campaign is intended to be the main contribution of the road haulage industry to National Productivity Year. , The pamphlet has been produced under guidance • of Mr. A. H. Roberts, 1VI.I.M.H.: If is pointed out in the introduction that time wasted in delays to road haulage vehicles might cost trade and industry as much as 000 million in a year.

Points dealt with in the .pamphlet include the provision of maneeuvring space in a loading yard, access roads, alternative types of loading deck, lighting and servicing.

For example, it is pointed out that vehicles up to 25 ft.'. long require 50 ft. clearance in front of a loading deck to obviate difficult manoeuvring, and 60 ft. is necessary for longer vehicles—though even this is not enough where frequent use of eight-wheelers is contemplated. Arch and doorway clearance to allow for vehicles loaded up to 15 ft. from the ground is recommended, methods of yard and access-road surfacing are suggested and the proper use of pallet systems is i;iscussed.

Further pamphlets to be issued at intervals during the course of National Productivity Year will include details of the wide variety of mechanical handling . . the wide variety of mechanical handling . . equipment available, a case history of a documentation system designed to prevent the waste of vehicle time, and the special problems to be found at ports.
