ROAD transport in the Highlands of Scotland has developed into a major means of freight movement, a special committee has reported to Mr. Marples (Transport Minister) and his colleagues at the Ministry of Aviation and the Scottish Office.

The committee, in a searching analysis of the transport problem in the loneliest part of Britain, says that the road haulage increase, in terms of vehicle-miles, was probably 40 per cent between 1954 and 1961.

But although the railways have shown a corresponding decline, the committee feels that the switch from rail to road may have gone as far as possible with present facilities and charges.

Explaining why road haulage may have even stepped over the limit of profitability, the report says, "The future development of road haulage and road passenger services (the subject of an earlier report) depends on further improvement of the main road system ".
