THE UNITED Road Transport Union (URTU) is claiming victory after the threat of strike action forced a haulier to withdraw a proposal to cut drivers’ wages.

Kammac, based at Skelmersdale, Lancashire, had told HGV drivers it intended to stop payment for their statutory 45-minute break. URTU successfully balloted the 22 drivers who were due to begin strike action on Saturday 10 December.

The company backed down, after an emergency meeting with URTU. “The dispute has been resolved, and we are working with the drivers to look to the future,” says Giles Shannon, Kammac transport director.

URTU says the cut would have cost the drivers £25 a week. “It’s a victory for the union,” says regional officer, Lee Pimbley.

“The guys took a stance, and their objective has been achieved – they should be applauded for taking this step so near to Christmas.” He claims the drivers have not received a pay increase for more than three years.
